I wanted a functional bong that was...
- durable: short means it doesn't get knocked over or grazed on furniture as easily, thick glass doesn't crack as easily, beaker bottom resists tipping
- smooth enough to handle bigger hits: beaker bottom allows more water volume for bubble to travel through and the ice catcher can cool the hit further
- easy to clean: simple with no percolators, splash guards, or fancy contraptions make it harder to clean
Tweaking the peripherals to my liking (see picture of my frankenbong), I finally have my dream bong, complete with everything I'd need. The Agent Stout is the perfect base for what has become a veritable Swiss Army bong, the utilitarian smoker's dream.
Of course, without the fancy percolators and splash guards, this is not the smoothest possible bong, but with a good diffuser, it is more than enough and strikes a great balance between smoothness and ease to maintain. With a shower head down-stem it can handle any big rip that a normal person might take, and with no harshness. To handle unnecessarily (intentionally) hot hits, with constant flame, one would need an ash catcher to avoid harshness. In its humble functionality, the Agent Stout has limits, but it maximizes the "ease of ownership to smooth hit" ratio, as bongs can be annoying to upkeep for some.

Started smoking the herb superb 1968 and though rolled joints were most common, pipes were the most economical (times of dope will get you through time of no money better than...) so I tried various pipes. I have created, repurposed and used a number of "pipes" over the years. My oldest is a brass pipe but the most unique were a skull pipe made from a W Disney "glow in the dark" plaster skull, the other was using a commercial sandblaster nozzle as a chillum. My first Bong (early 70s) was a ceramic one called "The Scope" (variant still made today) which I used until a 1985 job change. Retired and almost 40 years later I bought my first LA Bong. The first was one of the LA (less) Thick Bongs which broke while cleaning. It broke at the portion of the bong that forms a neck that the defuser tube and bowl insert into. The Agent Stout bong does not seem to have the potential weak points that failed on the prior bong. I also modified my cleaning process so I am hopeful that the Agent Stout bong will last for years to come.

Fantastic piece! Almost exactly as I wanted. This in a 12” would be phenomenal. Also, the down stem slides all the way down to the bell at the top of the down stem to be air tight. I like a Keck clip. It’s not airtight with one in place. Not a deal breaker. I will be ordering some new down stems to check fitment as well. Thank you.
